Cookbooks
As a new bride, the first food I cooked were hard-boiled eggs. It sounds like a simple task on the surface of it, until you are called to the phone by an upset parishoner. Your husband, the Reverend, has just left the house and said he would be back for a lunch of egg salad sandwiches and a bowl of tomato soup, and there was no way to contact him. I stayed on the phone until
the caller had calmed down and I made her a promise that as soon as the
pastor came back for lunch, I would have him call her. I put the phone down just
in time to hear an ominous popping sound coming from the kitchen. It was the
hardboiled eggs, boiled a bit too long. The pan no longer contained any
water and the eggs were exploding and hitting the low slung ceiling of the
kitchen.I looked up in time to dodge a single, bald, egg yolk decending from
it's spot, stuck on the ceiling tile for a second and then falling, hot and
messy, to the stove I was stupidly leaning over. I knew there was a lot of
science going on there, but I had no time to think about what it could be. As I stood, pregnant, on a kitchen chair, crying and trying to remove the egg stains from the unpainted tiles, I promised myself that I would write this book someday. Well, I have and I titled it "The Daughter-in-law's cookbook,in
honor of my first dinner guests, my inlaws! It contains so much information
for the beginner cook and for the cook who wants to know the basics and some
of the science that goes into a good meal, arranged well, and presented to the best of the cooks ability. There are many menus, detailed recipes, and hints, plus stories to read while you're waiting for the potatoes to boil. I
do hope you enjoy this book and benefit from the reading of it. It should be
the new bride's first cookbook and the mature cook's best reference to the
basics of home cooking. C. J.
Note: I have decided to update this cookbook and will put the new improved version of it on this site as soon as it is completed.
